Botulinum Tox Cosmetic is mainly used to treat ‘frown lines’ which appear in your brow and works by blocking the nerve impulses to the injected muscles with a very small dose being injected into the specific muscles responsible for causing the wrinkles and lines, allowing these muscles to relax. Once the muscles are relaxed, the overlying wrinkles soften or disappear.
Botulinum Tox Cosmetic is a pharmaceutical preparation of botulinum type A toxin, a protein extracted from the naturally occurring bacterium, clostridium botulinum. Botulinum Tox Cosmetic is supplied by Ispen, a European pharmaceutical company that specialises in the research, manufacture and marketing of medications for use. It is manufactured in the UK using a strictly controlled state of the art process.
Treatment involves a simple, non-surgical procedure which takes around ten minutes.
An initial 5 injections in the treatment area is generally needed for effectiveness and the procedure may cause minimal discomfort. Normal activities can be resumed very swiftly after the treatment.
The initial effects of a Botulinum Tox Cosmetic treatment will begin to appear in 2 to 3 days but the maximum effect may take from 1 to 3 weeks to become established. The effects can last from 3 to 4 months and may last longer with repeated treatments over time.
The safety and effectiveness of Botulinum Tox Cosmetic in the treatment of frown lines have been evaluated in a comprehensive programme of clinical studies and are documented in the approved product information.
After the procedure you may notice some swelling or redness around the injection points, which usually settles after a few minutes. Occasionally you may develop a small temporary bruise at some injection sites.
A mild headache may also occur for 1 to 2 days. A transient eyelid droop may develop but this an uncommon event. Skin rashes including rashes at the site injection have been reported rarely and reports of itching are uncommon.
There are unlikely to be any long term complications from the use of Botulinum Tox Cosmetic in the treatment of this condition.
